What is Transamerica?

Transamerica is a large, long-established life insurer — its roots go back to 1904 — and its final expense policies are underwritten by Transamerica Life Insurance Company. The company holds an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best, which measures an insurer's long-term ability to pay claims. That rating is solid, and on the strength of its size and history Transamerica is not going anywhere. Its final expense products are sold in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C.

Transamerica's name also comes with some baggage that a careful shopper should understand, and we cover it plainly in the watch-outs section below. The short version: the same legal entity that would underwrite your final expense policy has been the subject of several large lawsuits and settlements — but those cases involve a different product line (universal life insurance), not the final expense policies reviewed here. It matters because it is the same company standing behind the promise, but it does not mean the final expense product carries those specific problems. We separate what is documented from what is speculation.

Transamerica's final expense coverage

Transamerica sells two related final expense whole life products, and it helps to know the difference. The newer one is called FE Express Solution. It is a no-exam, simplified-issue policy with a fast electronic application — the company advertises a decision in as little as 10 minutes. FE Express is issued for ages 18 to 85, and its face amounts are the highest in this comparison: up to $100,000 for applicants ages 18 to 75, and up to $25,000 for older applicants. The second product, Immediate Solution, is the older workhorse, issued for ages 0 to 85 with face amounts that step down by age band — up to $50,000 for younger applicants, $40,000 at ages 56 to 65, $30,000 at 66 to 75, and $25,000 at 76 to 85.

Both products come in two flavors of underwriting, and this is the core decision. The immediate (full-benefit) version pays the entire death benefit from day one — if you qualify on the health questions, your beneficiary is fully covered from the first day the policy is in force. The graded version is for applicants with more health history: it carries a two-year graded period during which a death from natural causes pays 110% of the premiums you paid in (minus any unpaid loans) rather than the full face amount. After two years, the graded policy pays the full amount for any cause of death not specifically excluded. The maximum face amount on a graded policy is capped at $25,000. As with most carriers, accidental death is treated differently from natural-cause death during the graded window — confirm the exact accident terms on your illustration.

Neither product requires a medical exam; approval is based on your application answers, sometimes cross-checked against prescription records. The policies build modest cash value over time, premiums are guaranteed level for life, and Transamerica includes a Concierge planning benefit — assistance with funeral-service logistics and document handling for the family — at no additional cost. Other optional riders exist but vary state by state and are not published in one central place, so you will need to confirm what is available where you live. On price, Transamerica is among the cheapest carriers in this comparison: sample premiums for $10,000 of coverage at age 65 run roughly $41 a month for a woman and about $54 a month for a man.

Strengths

Value and flexibility are where Transamerica stands out. Its sample premiums are among the lowest we found at typical senior ages, and its face-amount ceiling — up to $100,000 on FE Express Solution — is by far the highest in this set, which makes it one of the few final expense carriers that can also serve someone wanting a larger policy. The age range is the widest here too, and being available in all 50 states plus D.C. means most shoppers can actually buy it.

The application experience is genuinely fast. A no-exam electronic application with a decision in as little as 10 minutes removes a lot of the friction that makes buying insurance unpleasant, and the included Concierge planning benefit adds real, if modest, value for the family at claim time. For a healthy applicant who qualifies for the immediate full-benefit version, the combination of low price, high available coverage, and fast approval is hard to beat on paper.

Watch-outs

The trust record is the reason to slow down. Transamerica's NAIC complaint index — a regulator-tracked measure of complaints relative to company size — has run roughly four times the industry median for individual life insurance, according to aggregator citations. That is a meaningful signal that customers file more complaints than they do against the typical insurer. Separately, the same legal entity has settled multiple large class-action lawsuits, including a $57 million settlement over cost-of-insurance increases and an $88 million settlement (the Thompson case), and faces a separate suit alleging it let policies lapse without proper notice. Here is the important nuance: those cases all involve Transamerica's universal life insurance products, not the final expense policies reviewed here. Universal life is a different, more complex product. But it is the same company, so the pattern is worth weighing — a shopper should not read it as proof the final expense product is flawed, nor dismiss it as unrelated.

On the customer-experience side, Transamerica holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (though it is not BBB-accredited) and closed 201 complaints there in a recent 12-month span. And because rider availability varies by state and is not centrally published, you cannot easily compare the full feature set without getting a state-specific quote. Bottom line: the product looks strong, but the servicing and litigation history mean you should insist on clear paperwork and understand exactly what you are buying before you sign.

Who Transamerica fits

Transamerica fits a healthy applicant who qualifies for the immediate full-benefit version and wants either a low premium, a larger-than-typical face amount, or both. If you want more than the $25,000-to-$40,000 ceiling most final expense carriers cap at — say, $50,000 or more — FE Express Solution is one of the few no-exam options that can accommodate that, and its fast application is a real convenience. It is also a reasonable choice for a moderate-health buyer who lands in the graded version and accepts the two-year waiting period, given the competitive pricing.

It is a weaker fit for a buyer who prioritizes an insurer's complaint record and clean litigation history above all else — for that shopper, a higher-rated carrier with a lower complaint index may be worth a slightly higher premium for peace of mind. And, as with any final expense policy, consider whether you need one at all. If you already have savings earmarked for a funeral, a payable-on-death (POD) bank account, or existing life insurance large enough to cover final costs (often $7,000 to $12,000 or more), a small whole life policy is an expensive way to hold money you could control directly in a POD account. Final expense makes sense when you lack that cushion and cannot build one quickly — particularly if health rules out cheaper term life.
